The WSET Level 4 Diploma OFFICIAL D4 Classroom course is finally available in Japan!

The WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines is an expert-level qualification covering all aspects of wine. It is a key milestone for those aspiring to become a Master of Wine, providing the foundational knowledge and skills required to pursue this prestigious title.

The D4 Sparkling Wines unit explores the world of sparkling wine in depth, combining technical understanding with global context. Students learn how vineyard decisions, grape varieties, winemaking techniques and regional traditions come together to shape the styles, quality levels and commercial success of sparkling wines worldwide.

From traditional-method classics to modern tank-method styles, D4 provides a comprehensive look at how sparkling wines are produced and what defines their character. Topics include harvest choices for base wines, the impact of yeast and lees ageing, blending practices, pressure levels, sweetness categories, and the practical considerations behind large-scale or premium production.

The unit also examines the major sparkling-wine regions of the world — including Champagne, Prosecco, Cava, Crémant, Franciacorta, Trentodoc, and key New World producers — focusing on the factors that differentiate their wines and influence both style and quality.

This classroom course is the official D4 offering for Diploma candidates, delivered by a WSET® Certified Educator. It may be taken as an alternative to the D4 Online course and will make students eligible to sit the D4 exam (which must be applied for separately).

  • WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wine Candidates ONLY.
  • Precedence will be given to candidates who have not taken the D4 online course yet and who have sat the D1 exam at least once.
